The hit PC strategy game by Pyro Studios can now be enjoyed on the PS2 with the release of Commandos 2.Not only will you have to avoid detection from the guards, but you'll also have to do so while climbing, swinging, driving, and even swimming. Interacting and relying on the environment is one of the added features of this sequel - I guess the developers must have assumed the last game didn't already offer enough of a challenge.

In total, there are 12 missions through 11 different areas that will take you numerous restarts to get through. The locations will include a variety of stereotypical hotspots that appear in B-movies and Sergeant Rock comic books like a U-Boot pen and a Japanese aircraft carrier. Should you decide to take on this mission you'll once again venture deep into enemy territory and work toward completing a series of mission-based objectives. If you already played the previous game, than you will either love or hate Commandos 2, accordingly. This time, however, your team has grown in size and you even have a dog to join the fun - because we all know how Lasie and Rin Tin Tin really won World War II. The setup is still utterly silly, more reminiscent of Hogan's Heroes (or perhaps Gilligan's Island) than The Eagle Has Landed. Well, listen up elite troopers, Commandos 2: Men of Courage is more of the same, and once again you'll lead your hardened team of vets into the heart of Third Reich territory while also heading to the Far East and South Pacific to bring some pain to the Japanese. Even knowing the secrets to success still meant that your timing had to be perfect. Additionally, Commandos wasn't exactly a long game, nor did it offer all that many missions - but it did take a long time to finish because you'd have to restart them time and time again. There were limited ways of completing goals and you had limited save points.

It had its share of problems, like the fact that every member of the team had to survive a mission and that only select team members could actually drive a truck! This was balanced out by some interesting locations and a variety of mission types, but calling this an action or even strategy game is like saying Myst is a first-person shooter!Ĭommandos was all about timing and getting your characters in the right place at the right time. The original Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines was an all too challenging, yet somewhat enjoyable, romp that was more of a puzzle-solving than action game.

On top of that, the PS2 version of Commandos 2 has that same disappointing quality of cheapie "Made for TV" movies, especially in terms of visuals.

What does this have to do with Commandos 2: Men of Courage? Well the characters in the game are more akin to a lousy TV movie of the week than anything resembling the actual exploits of Allied Special Forces during World War II. They're too much more like Ken Wahl or Larry Wilcox, and before you say, "they weren't in The Dirty Dozen," they were in the craptacular TV sequel. The "Dirty Half Dozen" are back - but as with the first game the soldiers you lead just don't measure up to Lee Marvin, James Brown, Charles Bronson, or even Telly Savalas.
